Education Minister Chris Hipkins today announced his preliminary decision to dissolve the joint Council of the two Wellington Polytechnic’s Whitireia and WelTec and appoint a commissioner.
Just over three weeks ago, Minister Hipkins announced a cash injection of $15 million for Whitireia to meet its cash shortfall and operating costs. At the same time, he announced consultation on replacing the joint Whitireia/WelTec Council with a commissioner.
Minister Hipkins says the plans to dissolve the joint Council is in a bid to fix the “financial woes” of both polytechnics.
The joint Council has been given 21 days to respond to the Minister before a decision is finalised.
